GPO Fall Golf League Rules (Scramble)

Golf Rules

The league will follow USGA Rules unless otherwise specified

Teams

Each team will consist of two players, one of which must be a current or former employee of Navy Federal Credit Union or former member of GPO Golf League.

Each team is responsible for creating a name for their team.

Teams that do not provide a name by the first official week of the season, will be assigned a team name by the commissioner or scorekeeper for the league.

Attendance/Subs

If a team cannot make it at the regular Tuesday match time, they can request a make-up round with the commissioner, who will attempt to make arrangements to provide a monitor from the league to witness the round.

There are no subs for players/teams who cannot make the match on Tuesday.

Any team that is missing a player, the competing player may take a single mulligan per hole on each hole. Mulligans do not roll over to other holes. If you don’t use it, you lose it.

Round Scoring

Each team of two players will be playing against the entire field and not just against the team with whom they are sharing a tee box.

Each player on a team will tee off.  They will choose the best of the two shots and each player will hit the ball from within a club length of that point, no closer to the hole and from the same type of lie (fairway, rough, bunker, etc.).  This pattern will continue until the ball is holed.  The team will record their score for the hole and move to the next hole.

The maximum score a team can have on a given hole is two over par or double bogey which is:

  • 5 on a par 3 hole
  • 6 on a par 4 hole
  • 7 on a par 5 hole

If a team reaches double bogey and has yet to hole the ball, the team will pick up their ball and receive the maximum score of double bogey for that hole

At the end of the round, the team’s final score will be the total score for all nine holes of the round, minus the team handicap.

League Scoring

The scores for the week will be added up and put in order of smallest to largest. Based on the number of teams participating in the league, each team will receive 2X the inverse position they came in for the week.

Example:

There are 10 teams in the league.   This is the value of the points for each place  for the week

TeamScore minus handicapPlacePoints for the week
A3512 X 10 = 20
B3622 X 9 = 18
C3732 X 8 = 16
D3842 X 7 = 14
E3952 X 6 = 12
F4062 X 5 = 10
G4172 X 4 = 8
H4282 X 3 = 6
I4392 X 2 = 4
J44102 X 1 = 2

Playoffs

There will be no playoffs for this format.  The team with the most points at the end, wins. We will recognize the top three teams. In case of a tie, we will use the following tiebreakers, in order:

  • Lowest total net, handicap adjusted score for the season
  • Lowest total gross score (before handicap adjustment) for the season

Handicapping

Handicapping for this format will be based on each team having an “A-player” and a “B-player.”  The A-player is the team member with the lower handicap.

Teams will be handicapped based on the following formula:

Thirty-five percent of the A-player’s handicap plus fifteen percent of the B-player’s handicap rounded to the nearest integer. Or ROUND((0.35 X A-player’s handicap) + (0.15 X B-player’s handicap))

Note: The highest allowable handicap for individuals entering the league will be capped at 20.

Example:

Team X’s A-player’s handicap = 9

Team X’s B-player’s handicap = 11

Team X’s unrounded handicap = 0.35 X 9 + 0.15 X 11 = 4.8

Team X’s actual handicap = 5

Handicaps will be re-calculated every week.   Based on where a team finished in the standings for the week, points will be added to or subtracted from the A-player’s handicap and the team handicap will be recalculated.

Here is the weekly handicap points for a league of 10 teams

Team Place for the WeekAmount added to the A-player’s handicap
1-2
2-1.5
3-1
4-0.5
50
60.5
71
81.5
92
102.5

Example

For Team X from the previous example in a 10 Team League, if they finished in first place for the week, their next week handicap would be:

 0.35 X (9+ (-2)) + 0.15 X 11 = 4.1

Rounded  to 4

IF they finished last:

0.35 X (9+2.5) + 0.15 X 11 = 5.675

Rounded to 6

All handicap adjustments will be applied to the ‘A’ player’s handicap before the calculation is made. The team’s handicap may fall below zero based on this method.

Inclement Weather

If the weather does not permit us to play on a given Tuesday, no attempt to make up that week will be made. The season will end on the week scheduled at the beginning of the season.

League Contests and Buy-ins

The following contests are sanctioned by the league and are voluntary

  • Closest to the Pin (CTP)
    • $5 buy-in per week
    • Single Par 3 hole selected for the contest each week by the commissioner
    • Person hitting the ball on the green and closest to the pin wins the pot
    • If no one is able to hit the green, the pot is donated to the charity
  • Tee Busters
    • $2 buy-in per week
    • All proceeds will go into the charity donations pot
    • Each member of the league may purchase a tee buster for use on a single hole, per member, per week. The choice of hole is up to the member
    • The member may not use the Tee Buster as a mulligan.
  • Hole In 1
    • $1 buy-in per week
    • The member who gets a hole in 1 during the league competition will receive the hole in 1 pot only if they have bought into the pot ($2) before the round in which they scored the hole in 1.
    • The pot will begin at $100 and will only fall below $100 if someone wins the pot.
    • A percentage of the unclaimed hole in 1 pot will be donated to the charity
      • 50% of the pot not to exceed $200 or pot amount minus $100, whichever is the lesser.
        • e.g. if at the end of the season, there is $150 in the pot, then $50 is donated to the charity and $100 rolls over to the next season.
        • e.g. if at the end of the season, there is $300 in the pot, then 50% would be $150, so $150 would go to the charity and $150 would roll over to the next season.
        • e.g. if at the end of the season, there is $600 in the pot, then 50% would be $300, so $200 would be donated to the charity and $400 would roll over to the next season.
    • The amount in the pot if it is unclaimed during a season will never fall below $100 to start the next season.
